Hello Readers,

Yes I am hopeless but unfortunately real life often does get in the way of my mini life. With my current position at work it tends to be the school holidays that I get to finally get back into mini making. My poor Victorian house gets covered over for up to ten weeks at a time and every now and then I lift its covers and say....yes one day I will get back to completing you....after all where is all that furniture going to go?

I recently bit the bullet so to speak, purchasing some miniature tiles for my house...due to the cost I could really only afford to do 3 areas. (Seriously the tiles I purchased are more expensive then the real life tiles I have in my current house....scary I know)

The first area was the house foyer or entrance...this went pretty smoothly. I used matboard as a base and glued each tile to it. They are really bright, which has lead me to wonder...what on earth (Colour wise) am I going to put with it?

The 2nd area I tried was the bathroom...ok so I was totally clueless when it came to the border tiles but what I have is it.....I managed to pull it apart several times and had enough...note to self...never use border tiles again....I'm sure there is some sort of magic number that makes it work...but I have no clue...hopefully my fixtures can cover the multitude of mistakes.

I started the veranda today...so far so good...very painful at the edges but I might have to have many decorative planter boxes...I don't know....maybe I am too critical of my own skills but its never quite what I want it to look like...

I wish I could be like many of the miniature makers I talk with online...some of them throw something together fairly quickly....and make quick decisions....does anyone else agonize about every little detail?

Well back to gluing....those tiles await...
Hello Followers, long time no talking....yes well that is my fault as real life house building has got in the way.

One thing I have managed to do though is work on a smaller scale project. In the last few months I attended a workshop on how to build this lovely house by Red Cottage Miniatures. It's 1/24th scale and I love it. The kit comes complete with staircases, windows, doors and trims...

It is also my first attempt at using paperclay for the exterior. During the workshop I learned aging techniques as well as paint ideas.

The house also enabled me to test my lack of skill in the lighting department. I used tape wire for this project and certainly will be using it again.
Hello Readers,

Well I was determined to try and finish shingling my house before the end of January and I'm not too far off achieving my goal.

They are split cedar shingles that came precut and ready to lay. As you can see there is quite a variation in their colour but I'm happy with the look.

Tips:

1. BOTTOM EDGE: Most miniaturist recomend you start by gluing a small (about 1/4) of a shingle long ways along the bottom edge of your roof. This enables the shingles to lay flatter. If you don't do this your shingles will stick out.

2. SCISSORS: The cedar shingles are easily cut with scissors (please don't use your best craft scissors for this project....hide them....hide them!!!!!)

3. DRAW LINES: Draw lines for shingles to line up to!!!!!! (I didn't do this so well in this project so its a little wobbly) Take a look at my old post and you will see what I mean.
http://tailsofadventurewithindyandpoppy.blogspot.com.au/2013/03/the-roof-is-on-but-not-complete.html

4. GLUE: Choose your glue: I used wood glue....according to some miniaturist it's a big no no. But I had minimal problems using it. The main thing to remember is to take your time. Glue on a few...leave it for ten minutes...then do another section. Too much at one time will lead to shingles moving...falling off or drying crooked.

5. MIX IT: If your shingles came in separate bags. Mix them up before you start. The shingle colours very so much but if you don't mix them it will stand out.

I hope this helps: It is a bit of trial and error, but if you take your time you will be suprised by your results.

Well its time for more shingles

Hello Everyone,
What a difference paint can make. I've actually started to get excited again about the house as it now looks like a house.

As you can imagine there has been hours of work in painting. 2 undercoats and at least 3 colour coats. The windows have been painful also. The paint seems to disapear and takes several coats to get any coverage at all. (I have used good quality paint for this project and it still has been painful)

Getting closer to shingle time.

So for tips:

1. Paint: It is worth getting a good quality paint. I figure you want your house to last a long time, ( and it does go a long way)

2. You can use a big brush but I found a brush the same size as the cladding.....I had hardly any drips and didn't miss to manyparts. It also can get into those fidly areas that a big brush can't.

3. Sand, sand and sand. Before you paint.....sand between coats as well.

4 If you can purchase window that have removeable glass (plastic) buy them. A great way to guarentee clean windows.

Happy New Year: Ok so I'm a little late with my greetings, but I've been a bit busy. This time last year I was rushing around painting my real life house so I had very little time for minis. This year, I'm set. My goal is to get going, hopefully painting and shingle-ing the house before I start back at work.

I was really unsure about my paint choice but I really like blue, so the cedar cladding has had a coat of paint with "duck egg blue". I plan to trim it in white, but would also like another colour. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The chimney has had it first coat of paint and Im pretty chuffed with the effect so far. You may remember from a previous post that I used coffee stirrers to make the individual bricks. See it here:

http://tailsofadventurewithindyandpoppy.blogspot.com.au/2014/07/chimney-almost-complete.html

I really like the effect so far....Im actually hesitant to put another coat on. Both paints are acrylic.

Anyway...its time to give the house another coat! So its off to the shed for me.
Good Evening readers.

Well you do find dollhouses everywhere. Today I was in one of my favourite shops checking out their Christmas decorations when I stumbled upon this lovely. It's a Wedgewood display for their beautiful Christmas Decoration. I so want one!!! Alas not for sale. So perhaps it should be a future project. I also thought you could use it to place your very special miniatures in it as well...ahh the possibilities are endless.
Hello Readers:

As I am nearly finished my cladding (one wall to go) I decided to see if the pre made windows would fit. After a bit of sanding with the Dremel (Im starting to love this tool!) most fitted in fairly well.

I'm not planning on glueing them in until much latter as I will prepping each one before installation. Most of the windows came with the kit. The only thing that is a little disappointing is that they aren't opening.
I have to admit, they really do start to make it look like a house and not so much like a shell which it has looked like for a long......long....long time.

Till next time,
Keep on mini-ing.
I have been very nervous about having a go with my new scroll saw so yesterday I thought I'd give it a go. In my previous post I mentioned that I would attempt to use old blinds for the timber. Well I found it fairly easy to cut, but one downside was chipping. It didn't seem to happen over the entire piece of wood, but some parts I recut as I was not happy with the result. Anyway here it is. A sewing box. It will need a bit more sanding and then staining, but I'm pretty happy as it was my first attempt.
Hello Readers,
I have always wanted a power tool of my own so I finally bit the bullet and purchased one. On a few blogs and forum posts people mentioned using a scroll saw to make miniatures. After a bit of research I thought I'd look into it.

Many of our hardware shops in Australia sell cut priced scroll saws...so the question was...do I go with a cheaper one or do I go for something a little bit more pricey. After seeing (and HEARING....add swear words here!!!!) my boyfriend use cheaper power tools that failed within a few hours of use I thought.....pay a bit more and so I did.

So here is my new "baby" a Makita scroll saw. I had a quick go this afternoon and WOW, I was so impressed! NO TIMBER IS SAFE!!!!!!!

I know it won't be able to cut really small stuff, however for the items I want to make I think it will be great.

Now to my cheaper find this week. I was looking for a cheap supply of timber and thought...what about an old timber blind. So with this in mind I was off to our closest recycling centre and found this beauty for $5. As you can see I have already pulled it apart, ready to use.

The timber is about 5cm wide and only a few mm thick which I thought would be great to use for my kitchen cabinets, bookshelves and other items.

If you have any ideas of what I could use it for...let me know.

Time to experiment!!!!!!
PS. Thought Id share with you a quick photo from a recent visit to Australia's capital city, Canberra. Each year they have a spring festival called Floride. They plant thousands of tulips. Well the answer is 3D printing. With this additive manufacturing process if you think it you can make it!
I have been investigating the idea of a 3D printer since I purchased my digital vinyl/paper cutter. As I found it so easy to use. But after much looking I decided that owning my own printer is definitely out of my price range at the moment. ($1400 is a lot, and imagine how many minis I could buy for that!) So what are my options?
Well I found an online store that could offer me the best of both worlds. I can get my own designs made or I can purchase other people's lovely work. If you haven't visited this site before here it is :
http://www.shapeways.comUsing the information from the Shapeways site I did have a quick go at designing a small piece. A small wall panel part that could be used in modern scenes. I used a free online program http://www.3dtin.com which allowed me in under 3 mins create a fairly quick attempt. (I'm sure if I spent more time on it, I could achieve much better results) It was fairly easy to use. I do like the idea of making something that is one of a kind. If I spent more time on it, I would create slightly larger opening or shelves that you could sit your mini art pieces onto. As you can see, I'm well away from creating such custom pieces as you see below. (But you've got to start somewhere right?)

As you know from previous posts I have started a collection of 1/12th modern furniture, my main problem has been cost. I almost fell over when I purchased a chair at the miniature fair. (Did I really pay $!! for it?) After looking for a while on the shapeways site....here are a few of my wish list items.

My first picks are mainly furniture, but it got me thinking.....

I have always thought of making my boyfriend a mechanic's room box. Look at these lovelies that I

could use for it!

One thing that I would like to explore is 3D printed animals. I have absolutely no idea on how to go about it but would love to have a 1/12th version of my "fur kids" especially the ones that are no longer with me.

Ksenia agrees with me "Who wouldn't want a 1/12th scale Border Terrier for their house?"

Anyway, I'd love to hear from anyone who has actually gone ahead and printed something. Or what items that you think you would like to have a go at printing. The possibilities are truly endless.
Talk soon, IndyPoppy
Yes it has been a very long time since I have blogged about my house. Unfortunately my real life house has been in the way and taking up most of my time. We decided to finally put our house on the market at Christmas, so it meant painting, decorating and lots and lots of packing! One of the first things to be packed was my miniature collection. As we will be living in our studio until the house is built most things are packed up in the shed, so alas, not much mini making.

One thing I did get to do is attend the Sydney Fair. It was a great fair as always. Lots of great displays and of course lots of minis.
Hello Readers,

It's been a while, I've been super busy. (Wish I could say that it was mini-ing, but alas not). But every now and then I get a few minutes to stick a few more "bricks" to my house. I have finally completed the front of the basement and so its now on to the sides. They will be coated with a brick or stone like paint at a later date.

What do you think? Was it worth the effort. I hope so.
Hello Readers,
It's been a while and I haven't had much time to make minis. As you may already know, I am collecting items for my Victorian dollhouse and so far I have resisted other eras but......

Well I came across this set on gumtree and I couldn't look away! This is volume 3 of the "Design Interior Collection". There are 9 items in this collection. I'm quite impressed with their details.

This collection is many miniature versions of Charles and Ray Eames famous designs.

Well its the closest I will ever get to one of their designs.

So the hunt is on. I'll be hanging out on eBay I'm sure to find the other sets.

Do you collect any of these and if so what's your favourite piece?
Hello Followers,
Well its been a few busy weeks with work but I finally had a few hours spare to work on the chimney for my Victorian House.

From my last post you might remember that I decided to try my own technique to make miniature bricks. After cutting up a few hundred coffee stirrers and sticking them down I have an almost complete chimney. It needs two extra parts to be added to heighten the whole chimney so that it will be just above the roofline.

Now for a big decision. Should I used these technique for the basement or should I make it look rendered? I probably will brick around the top part of the basement in places like below the bay window and veranda. But if I start it means hours and hours of cutting and gluing and will it look over the top?

Readers I'd appreciate your advice!

HOW TO:
A few people asked how did I do it so here is a quick how to.
STEP 1: Measure starting from the top of your item lines that are 7mm apart using a lead pencil.
STEP 2: Measure your coffee stirrers. I made my bricks 20mm or 2cm. To be to scale they should be slightly smaller but with 1000's to cut, an easier measurement saves time.
STEP 3: (Optional) If you have a cutter like my Easy cutter, you can place a piece of strong tape on it as a marker. (This trick my boyfriend came up with after looking at me measuring and cutting and measuring and cutting)
STEP 4: Check the cut edges, some might need a quick sand.
STEP 5: Start at top of piece, glue your first 20mm piece, use an old credit card or store card as a spacer. Place it between your two pieces.
STEP 5: When you get to an area where your 20mm piece is too big, cut a piece to fit.
STEP 6: You can decide on how you stagger your bricks, you might it to be uniform or slightly more staggered.
STEP 7: Coat your finished product with a mixture of wood glue and water. This well help to seal your bricks.

Well readers, I'm off to decide on the next step. Don't forget to comment on what you think I should do for the basement. I would love to hear what your ideas are.

Hello Readers,
So I finally made a decision on bricks…well for the most part :) After my experiments with different products I'm trying my own thing.

I found these coffee stirrers at a local catering company and thought that they are almost the right thickness and size to make individual bricks.
I have started gluing them down and so far I am pretty happy with the results. I am wanting a rendered/painted finish so you shouldn't see the wood at all.
So I have started with the bottom part of my chimney. The gluing is probably the trickiest part, making sure its straight and equally spaced. Anyway theres plenty of cutting and gluing to do. Guess that's what long weekends are for.
Hello Readers,
Again I have been struggling with my decisions on which brick idea to use. So far I have tried a couple of ideas found on the internet.

The first one I tried was sandpaper bricks. I found this one to be just too complicated to cut! One suggestion was to use a shredder….it did shred….the sandpaper to bits.

Magic Bric….Looks fairly realistic, however I'm not entirely convinced about the size of the grout lines.

Coffee stirrers, gaps created using old credit card as spacer.

My first and worse attempt at using paper clay. I let it dry before I carved it, it fell to bits. Don't mind it as a render though.

So readers as you can see my experiments are not having much success. Any ideas? Help Please!
I like the stirrer idea, but it would require literally thousands to be cut up as my basement and chimney are huge.

IndyPoppy

If you are like me, you probably have a Facebook account and use it fairly regularly. But do you use it to communicate with other's in the dollhouse community?

Whilst attending the Sydney Dollhouse and Miniature fair and speaking to other bloggers and miniaturists. I thought wouldn't it be great to have a place to go to see other peoples work, share ideas and just have fun.

So I decided "Why not start it myself?"

So what do you think?

Who wants to join me?

If your a dollhouse or miniature enthusiasts from anywhere in the world. I'd love to hear from you.

I'd love to see you there!

Hello Everybody,
As promised I thought I would share with you my purchases from the fair. As I am working towards furnishing my Victorian Dollhouse I purchased with that in mind. If it wasn't from this era (or as close as I could get to this era) I wasn't buying it.

However for anyone with a vintage or modern dollhouse the Sydney fair has plenty for you too. I have to admit, it has made me think…is one dollhouse enough? I'd really like to get a vintage Triang 1930's/40's and a modern dollhouse to add to my collection. Ahh the possibilities!

Anyway to the purchases:
Hello Everyone. Well it has been a very exciting week for me as it was time for the annual Sydney Dollhouse and Miniatures Fair at Homebush.

It has been two years since I was last at the fair and was so dissapointed that I couldn't attend last year. So rain, hail or shine I was going this year.

After convincing my Mum that she needed to come (after all I needed someone to stop me if I got mini-itis. The need to buy every mini you see!) We headed to Homebush.
Our first stop was to look at the wonderful displays. The houses were in multiple scales, some 1/144, 1/12 1/24 etc. Below are a few of my favourite houses/ideas from the show.

I hope everybody is getting ready for a fabulous Easter break. I have been incredibly busy over the past couple of months so my dollhouse has come to a standstill.

One thing I was able to do was attend the ACT Miniature Enthusiasts show. I didn't go crazy at the fair…even though there was lots of tempting products. I thought I'd save my money for the Sydney Miniature Fair in May.

I did buy a couple of small items. The first photo is a small basket with easter eggs. So cute! It's from miniature food maker Anastasia Grogan. (anastasiasdreams.blogspot.com.au) She had several lovely food items to choose from. Yum Yum.

My second item is a fern. I was unsure of the maker's name but I think it's Dianne Cotterill. (Any reader who did attend the fair, can you let me know if this is correct?) This is the third plant that I have purchased from the same seller. (Anyone remember the daffodils and iris?) I love the detail of the tiny "babies" that the fern has….a nice detail.

These were a gift with purchase….all ready for Christmas.

I also purchased an item for an experiment. After much research I had decided to do a trial of Magic Brik for the basement. I really, really, really wanted to use real stone from Richard Stacey http://www.richardstacey.com/welcome.html.

Unfortunately due to the enormous amount of square inches I need to cover I was looking at nearly $1800 just for the stone. That wasn't including the postage. They are such a beautiful product, and I am so disappointed, but, when making dollhouses you still have a budget!

So I'm going to try Magic brick with a cement type paint product. I will try a small sample before fully committing to it. If anyone has any suggestions for a brick/stone finish or links to ideas please let me know.
My last photo today is of the newest member of my family. Many of my readers might remember that my beautiful great dane Indy died last December. After much discussion with my boyfriend we decided to have a break from great danes. Don't get me wrong. I love them…they are probably my favourite breed. But the fact is you get such a short time with them. Most make it to 8, if you are very lucky they make it to 10.

So with all this is mind, we went with a very different breed altogether. Introducing Ksenia (Kenzi) the Border Terrier. Kenzi is our first Border terrier so we are learning heaps about the breed. She is full of beans…..all of the time! She is a chewer of all things…so you need to keep your miniature collection in a very high place!

Here is a list of her favourite chewables:
Baby wipes
Hair ties
Paper towel
Pens and pencils
Plant tags (especially the really important ones that show my Mum where her rare bulbs are located!)
Hoses
Leads
Blue pegs (really does only eat blue ones!)
Bread bag tags
tea towels
Apple TV remote (it's perfectly bite size!)
Skirting board corners (this is her latest treat!)
Snails
Duck poo!
Thong (You would call this a flip flop in the USA)

So as you can imagine….she has turned the house upside down. Fun Times!
Kenzi came to us from a Breeder in Tasmania. So we think she probably has a bit of the Tasmanian Devil in her!

Well have a great Easter everyone. Talk Soon IndyPoppy

After my Mum's trip to England earlier in the year, I have developed an (unhealthy?) obsession with Heidi Ott items. As my birthday and Christmas are very close together Mum said "Here have some $$ for some dollhouse items." Anyway, after putting off making any decision to pretty much the last minute, I chose some items from the Heidi Ott catalogue, and began my internet search. I really wanted to buy them here (Australia) but found it incredibly difficult to find anything in stock. So my search went international. I ended up purchasing my items from www.heidiott.co.uk. I was really pleased with how quickly they got here. I ordered on the 20th of Dec, about 13 days. That's fast considering how many public holidays we have had. Everything made it in one piece too! The elephants that normally beat up my packages must be on holidays! :)

Now this has to be my favourite item, I have been drooling over this little train for at least 2 years. The reason being I have a pretty close match to it in O gauge.

This photo is of my "toy" O gauge vintage Hornby (Thanks to my boyfriend.....a Christmas pressie from a few years ago) It's clockwork...and magnificent. It is a bit of a pain to set up....and for the photo I only replicated the amount of track that came with the mini version. In the centre you can just see the miniature version.

The clockwork key with mini version. Sneeze and I might lose the key! The Aussie $2 coin is pretty small itself. ( A strange oddity about Australian coins are that the smaller the coin is the greater the value (this applies to the "gold" ones)

It even has a miniature "Fat Controller" (Thomas the Tank Engine!) He is lying down on the job! (very difficult to stand up)

The trains together gives you a little idea of just how tiny the train set is.

Another purchase was to add to my bedroom set. It's the dressing table and chair.

Lastly an item for the music room. A rather large harp.

Well it's back to the catalogues for me. Is it too Early to think about presents for next year? Nah!!!

Thanks Mum and T for my presents. Yes I will be annoying you latter to show you them!

So followers, what great mini gifts did you get this year? Or what treats did you buy for yourself?

Hello Everyone,
I hope you are enjoying the holiday season.
Yesterday I decided that I would take my mini skills and used them in a different project. I have always admired other peoples gingerbread houses and thought if I can make a dollhouse surely I can make a gingerbread one. Well the photo on the left is my 2nd ever attempt. Not too shabby, however, don't look too close!

Here are my tips: HE HE!

1. There are too many recipes on the internet...chose one quickly...you will be overwhelmed by choice and ingredient lists with lots of things possibly never found in any supermarket ANYWHERE!

2. Make a template that isn't out of paper...it sticks....and it sticks. Greaseproof paper works. Flour is your friend, use it when rolling out the gingerbread.

3. If you plan to light your house (which I did) make sure your house is big enough for the fixture. I cut a hole in the bottom of mine with a cookie cutter.

4. Icing is your friend! It's a bit like builders bog...you can used it to fill the gaps.(Believe me I had lots!)

5. If you are lazy like me....and are not a dab hand at using a piping bag, buy your icing from the shops. It even comes with fancy tips to make all sorts of patterns. ( Is icing meant to come out the other end of the bag?)

6. There is an icing conspiracy :) when buying icing make sure you buy double. I needed white...and I am sure that the container of white had half the amount of any other container in the packet. The bright blue icing that I didn't want to use would have gone on an on and on etc.

Anyway, you get my point! It's fun to make.

These are the little lights I purchased this year. They are LED tea lights. They are fantastic...and only a couple of dollars for 4. I used these in the gingerbread houses and to light my Christmas village.

The lights are on the village!
My last picture today is of my eldest and now sadly only dog Willow. She wasn't too keen on the hat, but wouldn't mind a mince pie or a piece of cake.

Well everybody I hope you have a safe Christmas/holiday season.
Hello Everybody,

I firstly want to thank everyone for their lovely thoughtful comments about the death of my great dane Indy. It has been a rough couple of weeks, but your comments are much appreciated.

Over the past few weeks the postman has been very busy delivering a few giveaway items and a recent purchase.

This lovely garden tub came from a giveaway from Mi Pequena Evasion http://pekevasion.blogspot.com. I love the way that it has been aged and really like the realistic look of the water.
Hannah from www.hannahsminiatyrer.blogspot.se also announced the winner of her VW bus guessing competition. I was so surprised to find that it was me! It is an absolutely wonderful mini VW. It is teeny tiny! Hannah I don't know how you made it so tiny with so much detail. Hannah also included a lovely wool dog. Here is an action shot of the puppy.
Another surprise is from http://eatcakeminiatures.blogspot.com. It is a red rose flower kit. I haven't been game enough to give it a go yet, but now that I am on holidays it is on my "to do" list. Which is getting longer and longer with many miniature projects.
I own an O gauge train set that would look fantastic with a little township so I finally found one. These little villages are very hard to find in Australia but I was lucky to find one from an online shop called Halcyon Hours. It was one of the last ones of this type in stock.. Thanks Halycyon Hours for sending it so quickly.

If you know of any other Australian stockists I would love to hear from you. I am now after the other two sets!

I will start to work on it over the weekend. I realise I won't get anywhere near completing it by this Christmas. Maybe next year! I'm debating if I should create it in the putz style or if I should keep it traditional. What do you suggest? Any ideas?

I hope to post again before Christmas...but there is lots to do...talk soon
Hello Everybody,
I know it has been a while since I blogged about my house but again real life has taken over from my mini life.

You may remember from my previous post I discussed my great dane being ill. A few weeks ago Indy was diagnosed with bone cancer. Sadly over the past few weeks Indy had been getting sicker and sicker. So on Saturday I said goodbye to my "fur kid".

She was a great dog, very affectionate and will be missed terribly.
